At last!! This is indeed an exciting discovery.  Thank you so much for sharing with me.  Hope you will present it at this year's Garrett Reunion.  When things settle down after Easter I will be in touch and I will certainly share this with the DeMore side of the family.  Wishing for you a glorious Easter.  Love,

Joretta

Thought you might be interested in this family history.

Dear Joretta and Ann,

We recently received this email which gives the details of Dr. Joel Garrett's death from the Athens Newspaper. We thought both of you would be interested to see it. We were so fortunate to have help on our search. The article sounds as if Dr. Garrett was well known and respected in that part of Georgia.

Love,
Gary & Karen

Mr. Niklason,

In July 2011 we were contacted by Mrs. Stacy Krumnow, Banks County Public Library Manager. She requested that the Banks County Historical Society assist you in researching Dr. Joel Garrett of Homer. At the August 2011 meeting of the Banks County Historical Society your request was presented and we were assigned to conduct that research.

Until just recently we'd only been able to find information regarding Dr. Garrett that you seemed to have already known. Then, only 2 weekends ago we had a chance encounter with Ms. Mandy Mastrovita with the Digital Library of Georgia. When we inquired of Ms. Mastrovita how to possibly locate the type of information you requested, she kindly offered to assist us.

Just a few days ago Ms. Mastrovita provided us with documented information regarding Dr. Garrett. We're including, quoted below, all email correspondence in chronological order. Additionally, you should find the 2 image files included as attachments that Ms. Mastrovita references.

We hope that this information helps you and your father in-law. Please let us know if you require further assistance.

Sincerely,
Mark & Tabor McCoy
Banks County Historical Society

Dear Stacy Krumnow,

I just spoke with you over the telephone. I am sorry for the bad connection. My name is Gary Niklason and I am helping my 90 year old father-in-law George Alexander from Winnsboro, SC to solve some of the family mysteries. George's great grandfather owned quite a bit of real estate in Homer before the Civil War. Our family has passed down the story that Joel was a doctor and was called out on a medical emergency on October 22, 1864 and was never heard of again. We have no information to verify this family legend.

We are hoping that there is some information in Homer to explain his disappearance. He owned property in what is now downtown Homer. A sheriff of Banks County made a real estate deal with Joe's widow Sarah Ella Venable Garrett where she sold the Homer property and was given rural land in nearby  Habersham County. We know that Sarah moved there and was burried in Mt. Zion Cemetary, Turnerville, GA.

Please let me know if you have any information on Joel Garrett, aka. Dr. J.W. Garrett in the Banks County Library.

Thanks,
Gary Niklason

PS: I have attached the pedigree for George's Grandfather Joseph Warren Garrett. Joel and Sarah were Joseph Warren's parents.

Hello—
I apologize for getting back to you so late regarding the queries you had about Digital Library of Georgia resources about "Dr. Joel Garrett," etc.
Using the Athens Historic Newspaper database at http://athnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/athnewspapers/search
I was able to locate a brief article titled “Dr. Garrett Killed!” in the AthensSouthern Watchman from Oct. 26, 1864, located on page 2.
The link to the page is available here at
http://athnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/athnewspapers/view?docId=news/swm1864/swm1864-0170.xml&query=Garrett&brand=athnewspapers-brand
You will need to install the DjVu browser plugin in order to view the page. It is available at
http://www.caminova.net/en/downloads/download.aspx?id=1
I have also attached 2 image files of the clipped article where I have enhanced the image to make certain that you can see it (the original newspaper file is still a little dark); I have also transcribed the article below.
Note: some things in the article may be disturbing.
[begin article]
Dr. Garrett Killed!
We learn that on Saturday night last, Dr. GARRETT of Homer, Banks county, was killed
by some cavalrymen, who came to Homer in the afternoon and by some means unknown to
us, got him to go off with them. He was found Sunday morning by the roadside two or
three miles from Homer, with near a half dozen bullet holes through his body. A piece
of rope was found attached to a limb near by, indicating that they had attempted to
hang him, but the rope looked like it might have broken with his weight. What was the
cause of this sad tradgedy [sic] we do not know. We hear that the cavalryman who did
the deed made no concealment of it, having gone on to the nearest house and made it
known, stopping long enough to procure something to eat. They stated, as we are
informed, that they found evidence on his person that he was employed by the Yankees
to entice negroes off to Atlanta. We have been told that some unpleasant suspicions
had been resting upon him for some time past, but are unable to ascertain if there be
any foundation for them. We do not know what steps, if any, have been taken to arrest
the cavalrymen.
See orders of Col. MAGILL, closing all drinking establishments.
[end article]
*If you have problems with the DjVu plugin, use the GALILEO “Contact Us” form to report it and receive technical support.http://www.galileo.usg.edu/scholar/ugalibs/contact/?from=http://help.galileo.usg.edu/technical/
If Dr. Garrett was enlisted as a Confederate soldier, you may be able to find more information about him by searching through individual records at the Georgia Archives’ Confederate Enlistment Oaths and Discharges site http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/confed.php or the Confederate Pension Applications site http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/TestApps.php (there are hundreds of records, which may be time-consuming, but you might be able to locate something useful).
Also, there might be some more information that you can narrow down to relevant dates in our Historic Books collections:
Georgia Historic Books http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?link=zlgb
Georgia-related Publications from the HathiTrust Digital Library http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/CollectionsA-Z/hathidl_search.html
Georgia-related Publications from the Internet Archive http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/CollectionsA-Z/iadl_search.html
Again, these would require more thorough, individualized searching, so I can guide you to these potential resources, but it may take further research to discover something you can use.
Sincerely,
Mandy Mastrovita
